Stitches of Canberra (Stitches) began trading in Canberra in 1968 as the Bernina Sewing Centre. The original shop operated in Belconnen Mall, then moved to The Canberra Centre. Due to centre’s redevelopment it relocated to Kingston. In 1995 space requirements prompted Peter Springer – the new owner – to move the shop to Phillip into much larger premises.
The shop has changed its name to Stitches of Canberra mainly because we now sold additional brands. Currently we deal only with the Brother and Singer brands having handed back the Bernina Dealership in 2008 after close to 40 years as the only ACT supplier.
Stitches of Canberra now stocks a full range of quilting fabric at the best Canberra prices, a full range of the popular DMC hand embroidery threads, much more haberdashery plus lots of beads, silk ribbon, zippers, Horn cabinets, scissors, lamps etc. When possible, we might just be able to help you find that odd thing you are looking for.
Over all these years, we have weathered the significant changes experienced by the sewing industry. The original sewing customer was more based around producing clothing, heirloom works and home furnishing. Today, there is still good demand for these skills but the trend is to elevate sewing to more of a recreational craft.
